ICU History
Industrial Credit Union was chartered in 1941 as the Puget Pulp Credit Union. The original members worked at the Puget Sound Pulp and Timber Company. Our first location was a little white house. The deposits were made at the kitchen table! In 1963, Georgia-Pacific Corporation purchased both the pulp mill and Pacific Coast Paper Mill amalgamating them into the present Bellingham division of Georgia-Pacific. The Puget Pulp Credit Union later changed its name to Georgia-Pacific Employees Credit Union.
Georgia-Pacific Employees Credit Union underwent a name change to Industrial Credit Union, also known as ICU, and a new charter in 1981. As more local Whatcom County businesses with less than 500 employees wanted the services of a credit union, we sought a small employee group charter. This new charter was written to serve all employee groups within Whatcom County with at least ten full-time employees and willing to offer payroll deduction.
As Whatcom County began to grow so did we; on September 6, 2000, ICU was granted its Community Charter. Now instead of serving only qualified sponsor companies and their families, ICU can serve anyone who lives, works, or worships in Washington State. Our Community Charter has been a monumental step forward for the future of ICU.
After our Community Charter a significant growth in our membership base occurred. We are proud to say that we now serve over 18,000 members in the greater Whatcom County area. With our membership growth we have also recognized the need to expand our reach to our members. 2005 saw the addition of two new ICU branches in Ferndale and Lynden to serve our north county members. ICU now has six branches and no-fee ATM's throughout Whatcom County to serve our members where they live and work.
